Why: After land takes shape as separate from water, the earth brings forth plants, “each after its own kind.” Science attributes life’s brilliant diversity to a shifting mosaic of habitats and climates interacting with gene pools over millions of years. Occasionally, changes in climate and habitat are massive and abrupt enough to cause extinction of thousands of species. We are living during the sixth great period of extinction. This apparently is the first largely driven by the habits of a single species – ourselves. To put the brakes on extinction, we must leave space for other species and address our impact on climate.
