Haverim,What an amazing week of events in Atlanta honoring the Earth this is. To mention just two, check out this evening's dialogue "Is Nature Ours?" between Rabbi Hillel Norry and Professor Mark Douglass, and Saturday's fun parade in Decatur's Oakhurst (see below). Coincidentally with this week's diversity of life theme, the article on our Omer to Honor the Earth (aka Project New Leaves) that just came out on the JRF web site begins with quotes on trees and leaves. This Erev Shabbat as Dev Noily leads services, Neil Norton will give a d'var about restoring balance, both in the Israelite community of the weekly parsha and in our modern global environment. Then Shelley Rose and Audrey Galex will give a Oneg that helps us envision a more sustainable future. The third weekly message follows. As before, if this message is arriving without active links, just go to http://ecoomer.wetpaint.com and click on "Third Day." Thanks for your interest.- Bill
To honor the third day of creation, we pledge to
Make space for the diversity of life.
Try this: Help native plants by uprooting exotic volunteers in your yard. Support efforts to set aside wild habitat interconnected by corridors. Help address the climate crisis by curbing unintentional energy use (see
Day One).
More…Why: After land takes shape as separate from water, the earth brings forth plants, “each after its own kind.” Science attributes life’s brilliant diversity to a shifting mosaic of habitats and climates interacting with gene pools over millions of years. Occasionally, changes in climate and habitat are massive and abrupt enough to cause extinction of thousands of species. We are living during the sixth great period of extinction. This apparently is the first largely driven by the habits of a single species – ourselves. To put the brakes on extinction, we must leave space for other species and address our impact on climate.
More…Outing: Oakhurst Earth Day celebration and parade co-organized by CBH's own Ruby Bock.
